UNDERCUT
YOUR
UPPERCUT
Just heard the news about Cap’ain Red, literally as his Undercut Your Uppercut was going up as the lead on Smoke Signals. I wrote him an email several days ago to let him know, but decided to surprise him instead.
Man, man, man, man, as he would probably say, who’s surprised now? At the moment I don’t know what I can I say about brother Jay that Nina Simone (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vDZsABHUbQ) doesn’t say for both of us, Sinnerman was his and is my favorite song – we talked about that sychronicity for over an hour a couple of months ago.
Since I heard the news this morning, I’ve had my head ducked deep into the closets of lost archives, looking for an article Jill Johnston wrote about Jay and Chris (Stoddard) up on The Rock, that turned out to be the last column she ever wrote for the Village Voice. She’d finally discovered real poetry in action from observing their very existence, and just didn’t see how she could ever use words on a page again to describe the real thing.
Amen.
